CD-ROMs contain vast amounts of information.  To locate the desired information, a SEARCH is conducted using a KEYWORD or PHRASE.

To facilitate searching, most CD-ROMs list every word on the entire disc in an INDEX which is invisible to the user.  This index allows the computer to access (locate) any word within a matter of seconds.
